Rent is a musical set in the 80’s, during the outbreak of AIDS. In the musical, a group of struggling paupers is doomed to be evicted from a tenement owned by a former slacker who because wealthy through marriage. Most of these people are afflicted with AIDS/HIV. The musical strictly depicts poverty as well.
Rent is a story about love, and loving life despite death. Despite vulgar words, 1234 and lesbian relationships, prostitution, the musical goes to show that there is hope in living amid the battle in AIDS/HIV, and there is a point in savoring what is left for each individual.
If deconstructed, each character in the musical represents the society where there is power, inequality and sodomy.
There are many attempts to symbolize the society through essays, speeches and whatnot. Rent is simple. It delivers an explicit message that aims to inform the public about life per se best illustrated in an essay.
